Lynwood, CA
Lynwood, CA in Los Angeles County has a population of just under 70,000 residents. Surrounded by the cities of South Gate, Compton, Paramount, Hollydale, Willowbrook, and Watts which is considered the central portion of the Los Angeles Basin. Lynwood a two-timer winner of the All-American City Award celebrates 100 years Centennial 1921-2021. With this celebration comes a new city motto “Strength Through Community”
Now did Lynwood even become a city? It started back in 1810 when Don Antonio Maria Lugo was given 29,514 acres of land by the King of Spain which ruled California at the time. After Lugo’s passing in 1860, the land was given to her daughter who in turn deeded it to a Los Angeles banker where it changed owners a few times before C H Sessions purchased 400 acres in 1902 and established a dairy and creamery. Sessions’ wife's maiden name; Lynne Wood.
The big contributor to the growth of the area can be laid at the feet of the Lynwood Company that was established in 1913. This company owned 800 acres and began selling 100 x 800 residential lots for $500 to $800. As this area grew quickly it found the need to find its own identity and in 1921 the City of Lynwood was incorporated.
The Los Angeles Interurban Railway, which later merged into Pacific Electric Railroad, built one the Santa Ana Line, which ran from Los Angeles to Santa Ana in 1904-05. The line passed through the heart of Lynwood. They called the depot on the corner of Long Beach Blvd and Fernwood, Lynwood, which was taken from the name of the dairy and creamery business. The Santa Ana Line was discontinued in 1958.
Bethel Park is also conveniently located along the T transit line for easy access to downtown Pittsburgh. There are two Port Authority rail lines that service the South Hills, and they both run through Bethel Park.
Bethel Park is the home of several historic locations including Bethel Cemetery, located next to Bethel Presbyterian Church. The cemetery houses the graves of residents going all the way back before the Revolutionary War. Bethel Presbyterian Church also houses many artifacts in their history room. The Schoolhouse Arts and History Center is currently experiencing a major renovation by the Bethel Park Historical Society.
